Dry Needling for horses

With the method of Dry Needling, pain and muscle tension can be treated in animal physiotherapy. The needles closely resemble those that are used in acupuncture.

They are inserted into so-called 'Triggerpoints'. Triggerpoints, also known as stresspoints, manifest as local muscle tightness. These tensions are very painful and can often radiate into other areas of the body.
With the dry needling technique, these Triggerpoints are specifically targeted for release. The needle puncture causes minimal tissue injury, triggering a process in the body to repair this micro-injury. Corresponding cells become active, and the transport of substances is stimulated. In the previously poorly perfused and undersupplied tissue due to muscle tightness, old waste products can now be removed, and good blood circulation can be restored. The muscle can work unrestrictedly again, and pain can be alleviated.

Dry needling is particularly useful in horses with their large body mass as a very helpful method for treating trigger points. From personal experience, I can say that horses remarkably accept the needles well, and they often visibly relax after the first insertion.
